PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

Located in Brisbane, “Uxbridge house is the quintessential family home,” says Tim Stewart Architects.

Spanning two levels and situated on a 400-square-metre site, Uxbridge house is a fresh take on the classic Queenslander.

Generally, a Queenslander home is a weatherboard house with battens underneath.

Tim Stewart sought to flip this by placing battens on the upper level to protect the home from sun exposure and ensure privacy.

The lower level, while still weatherboard, now sits on a darker base below.

As Stewart’s own home, Uxbridge house is designed for a growing family and achieves this by relying on a no-fuss approach.

Decked out in timber from IDEA sponsor Tongue & Groove, Uxbridge house is warm and compatible with the everyday happenings of family life.

Moving outside, the property rests along a bike path that travels up and out through many of Brisbane’s northern suburbs.

This geography provides the home with a definition, with “the greenbelt slicing through the inner suburb Grange,” explains Stewart.

“The public edges of the park and bike path influenced the layout of the home.

“The living, dining and kitchen area is a gathering space that has the opportunity to interact with neighbours and the community.

“As a completed entity, Uxbridge House gives beyond the family and out to the surrounding neighbourhood.”

This project showcases the impressive architectural lighting installation at a duplex located in the scenic coastal suburb of Buddina, Queensland. The project aimed to elevate the aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability of both indoor and outdoor spaces through carefully curated lighting solutions.
The lighting design concept was centered on three key principles:

Enhancing Aesthetics: To illuminate architectural features, accentuate design elements, and create visually stunning effects both indoors and outdoors.

Optimizing Functionality: To ensure adequate task lighting, adequate brightness, and well-lit spaces for various activities.

Emphasizing Sustainability: By incorporating energy-efficient lighting solutions and integrating natural lighting sources.

The installation at the Buddina project successfully demonstrates how the strategic use of lighting can transform a residential space into a captivating and inviting haven. The harmonious interplay of indoor and outdoor lighting has not only enhanced the aesthetics and functionality of the duplex but also contributed to sustainability and energy efficiency, making it a truly remarkable showcase of modern lighting design.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

At the Sir James Foots Building (University of Queensland, St Lucia), we recently embarked on an exciting project to modernise the informal learning spaces. Teaming up with Drummond Architecture and Innerspace (QLD), our objective was to bring to life the custom LED desk lamps that not only enhanced the oversall design of the space, but also create a sense of intimacy and focus at the desks.

The concept design of the lamp was produced by Justine Drummond (Drummond Architecture).
