The short answer is yes, provided it is outside of the zones deemed unsafe (refer to Australian Standards). If a pendant is inside the protected zones then it will need to be either extra low voltage, IPX4 rated, or double insulated. Where this zone occurs in a bathroom is often the complex issue for designers and electricians alike.

Bathroom Lighting & Electrical Safety: What You Need to Know

Bathrooms are unique spaces in the home when it comes to lighting design. Unlike other rooms, they combine moisture, water, and electricity — a trio that demands careful planning to ensure both beauty and safety. At Caribou Lighting, we believe great bathroom lighting should do more than just look good; it must also comply with Australian electrical safety standards to protect you and your family.

Understanding the Bathroom Lighting Zones

In Australia, electrical safety in bathrooms is governed by AS/NZS 3000 – Wiring Rules. This standard outlines “zones” within a bathroom to help electricians and designers determine where and what type of fittings can be safely installed.

  • Zone 0 – Inside the bath or shower base itself. Only low-voltage fittings (max 12V) with an IPX7 waterproof rating are permitted here.

  • Zone 1 – Above the bath or shower to a height of 2.25m from the floor. Lights must be at least IPX4 rated, or IPX5 if subject to water jets.

  • Zone 2 – Extends 600mm horizontally outside Zone 1 and up to 2.25m high. IPX4 protection is still required.

  • Outside Zones – Beyond Zone 2, normal light fittings may be used, though in bathrooms we still recommend higher IP ratings for longevity in humid conditions

(IP ratings measure a product’s resistance to dust and water — the higher the second number, the greater the water resistance.)

Layering Light for Function and Atmosphere

Once the safety requirements are met, the fun part begins — creating a lighting design that works beautifully for daily routines and relaxation alike.

  • Task Lighting – For activities like shaving or applying makeup, bright, shadow-free lighting at the mirror is essential. Wall-mounted lights at face height or backlit mirrors are popular options.

  • Ambient Lighting – Ceiling lights or dimmable downlights provide general illumination, ensuring the space is well lit without harshness.

  • Accent Lighting – LED strip lighting under vanities or along niches can add a touch of luxury and make the bathroom feel like a spa.

Why Compliance Matters

Installing the wrong type of fitting in the wrong zone can create a serious safety hazard. Electrical shocks, short circuits, and even fires can result from non-compliant installations. That’s why all bathroom lighting should be installed by a licensed electrician who understands the wiring rules and IP rating requirements.

Caribou Lighting’s Approach

We design bathroom lighting schemes that balance aesthetics, practicality, and safety. Our process includes:

  • Selecting fittings with the correct IP rating for their location.

  • Coordinating with electricians to ensure compliance with AS/NZS 3000.

  • Layering light for both functionality and relaxation.

A well-lit bathroom is more than just beautiful — it’s a safe, functional, and enjoyable space. With the right design and professional installation, you can have lighting that meets Australian standards while transforming your bathroom into a sanctuary.
